PenPals with a Purpose
Pen Pals with a Purpose connects 5th and 6th graders from the United States, UK, Canada and Australia with students at Kalwa Slum School in Mumbai, India - a Gabriel Project Mumbai - school - through structured email correspondence. Students are matched one-on-one and exchange emails throughout the school year, building real friendships across cultures.
Building Bridges Across the World: Pen Pals with a Purpose
The Pen Pals with a Purpose program connects students from the Global North with children attending our learning center in the slums of Mumbai, creating meaningful connections and friendships that transcend geography, culture, language, and economic background. Through the exchange of correspondence, drawings, photos, videos, and shared experiences, students on both sides of the world gain a deeper understanding of one another’s lives, hopes, challenges, and dreams.
For children in Mumbai’s underserved communities, the program provides far more than the excitement of receiving correspondence from abroad. It helps build confidence, communication skills, and English literacy while showing students that their voices matter and that the wider world is interested in their stories, ideas, and aspirations. Many children living in poverty have limited opportunities to interact with people outside their immediate communities. The children of Kalwa grow up absorbing a message every day: they are not worthy of the world’s attention. They are dismissed as “slum kids.” This program sends the opposite message - loudly and repeatedly: you are seen, you are valued, and someone on the other side of the world chose to know you. Having a pen pal fosters motivation, curiosity, and a sense of global belonging. Students are encouraged to dream bigger, continue their education, and see themselves as part of an interconnected world.
At the same time, students from the Global North benefit profoundly from the experience. In a world increasingly shaped by social media, stereotypes, and division, the pen pal program creates authentic human connection. Students gain exposure to different cultures, religions, traditions, family structures, and daily realities that are often very different from their own. They learn empathy, gratitude, and global citizenship not through textbooks, but through genuine relationships with peers their own age.
The program also challenges assumptions about poverty and privilege. Rather than seeing slum communities only through statistics or headlines, students come to understand the resilience, creativity, humor, intelligence, and humanity of the children they correspond with. These exchanges often inspire deeper conversations around inequality, social justice, education, public health, and the responsibility we all share in building a more compassionate world.
Most importantly, the Pen Pals with a Purpose program reminds all participants that despite differences in background or circumstance, children everywhere share many of the same hopes: friendship, opportunity, safety, education, and the chance to build a meaningful future.
Through these connections, young people learn one of the most important lessons of all; that even across continents and cultures, we are far more alike than we are different.

Liza and Monika's Story
Monika and Liza have been Pen Pals since 2017. Liza lives in NYC. Monika lives in a rural village in Mumbai. Her parents are migrant workers, so although she attended the GPM school, she constantly missed school to travel with her parents. After hearing about Monika’s life and building a genuine connection and friendship, Liza raised money to send Monika to boarding school in India. Monika has learned English, Math, Science and more. After a few years, Liza got Monika a phone so that they could communicate over FaceTime and Messages. In December 2025, Liza was finally able travel to India to meet Monika in person!
